We condemn the terrorist attack on Muslims in Egypt
The European Left condemns the bloodiest terrorist crime in recent Egyptian history, when terrorists bombed and attacked hundreds of praying Moslems in a Mosque in Bir al-Abd in northern Sinai during the Friday prayer, on 24 November 2017. More than 305 have been killed, among them 27 children, and over a hundred wounded.
The attack seems to have been carried out by 25 – 30 local representatives of Islamic State and is a serious escalation of violence and methods.
The attack has been followed up by the Egyptian government and army under President al-Sisi with an air strike against vehicles in the area which were supposedly part of the attack on the Mosque. Using bombing raids as a response against terror, eradicating not only possible terrorists but ordinary civilians as well, their houses and villages and towns, is a way to combat terrorism which can very easily escalate into hunting innocent civilians, increasing the repression already taking place in Egypt, and intensifying the conflict and the whole situation in Egypt and the region.
