European Left applauds peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC
The Party of the European Left salutes de commitment expressed by the National Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on the past 23rd of June, to proscribe “the use of weapons in the exercise of politics and work together to achieve a national consensus in which all political, economic and social sectors engage in an exercise of politics in which the values of democracy, the interchange of ideas and civilized debate prevail”.
This agreement on “Bilateral and Final Ceasefire and Cessation of Hostilities and Decommissioning of Weapons”, result of almost four years of dialogue between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP, was reached in Havana, Cuba, and reveals the commitment made by both sides to a definitive termination of all hostilities, the decommissioning of weapons, security guarantees for all citizens and the fight against criminal organizations that attempt against human rights, as well as political and social movements.
The commitment intends to put an end to more than fifty years of conflict in Colombia, reason why it marks an historical moment. Preparing “the institutions and the country for the reincorporation of the FARC-EP into civil life” is now one of the forward steps, although a final agreement is still to come.
The Party of the European Left praises all efforts made by both sides and negotiators to reach a peaceful agreement, where democracy and human rights play a major role.
