The Party of the European Left participated yesterday in the Marches of Dignity in Madrid
Tens thousands of persons took the streets of Madrid yesterday in a mobilization called by more than 300 social and trade union organizations with the motto "Bread, work, roof and dignity". Izquierda Unida (IU) and the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), members of the Party of the European Left (EL), with its vice-president Maite Mola, alongside MEPs, leaders and militants of IU and the PCE from all over the country, headed the banner of IU “The Dignity in March”.
During the rally, Maite Mola explained the importance of the presence of the Party of the European Left in this major mobilization: "We are in this demonstration, as we are in all the other organised in Europe asking for such basic things as bread, work and roof. It is a way of supporting the people of all Southern Europe, and Europe as a whole, in this crisis situation". And she added: "It is necessary to join forces in order to move forward and this mobilization is an example of it: Here we are social movements, trade unions and political parties. And, therefore, the EL necessarily has to be here, as we will be in a very important manifestation that will be hold in Italy next week."
The protesters arrived in nine columns from all the regions, claiming, among other things, the non-payment of the debt, the right to housing, the right to decent jobs and public services for all people and the rejection of the TTIP. This will be a step towards a "general labour and consumption strikes” scheduled for the upcoming October 22.
