The Party of the European Left (EL) welcomes the defeat of the far right in the presidential elections in Austria. Today it has won the Austrian people that has joined to give the victory to the independent and former leading member of the Austrian green party Alexander Van der Bellen and prevent Austria became the first country in Europe to be chaired by the leading figure of a party that has its roots in Nazism and is deeply xenophobic, misogynistic a reactionary. Today the democracy has triumphed in Austria and in Europe.
“We take park in this tribute with much sadness but also with great joy for celebrating that the Cuban people has had one of the best and biggest revolutionaries of history”, stated yesterday Maite Mola, Vice-President of the Party of the European Left (EL) after participating in the massive tribute paid to Fidel Castro in the Revolution Square next to the monument of the national hero José Martí, and images of Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto Che Guevara.
An EL-Delegation, consisting of Maite Mola (Vice-President) and Fabio Amato (member of Secretariat), is currently present in La Havana in order to pay tribute to Fidel Castro Ruz, following his death last Friday night. They are also taking part in the central public commemoration event tonight, before his ashes will be transported tomorrow from Cuba’s capital La Havana across the country to Santiago de Cuba.
The Party of the European Left would like to renew the expression of support and solidarity to his family, the people of Cuba, and the Communist Party of Cuba.
The Party of the European Left expresses its deepest concern about the offensive against the peace agreements that Colombia is facing. In this offensive, extreme right groups and some military officials have killed a number of peasant leaders which is growing alarmingly: 71 of them were killed this year alone and five of them only this November.
The Party of the European Left (EL) expresses to the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST – Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra) all its solidarity and support after the aggression committed against its Florestan Fernandes National School. The EL condemns the unjustified violence carried out in this attack in which firearms were used and some militants were arbitrarily detained.
The network of women of the Party of the European Left, EL-FEM, gathered this weekend in Athens, and interrupted their work to join the demonstration, held in the Greek capital, with the aim of denouncing the detention of 11 MPs of HDP - Democratic Party of the People, which represents the vote of left-wing and pro-Kurd of Turkey.
The two co-leaders of HDP – Peoples’ Democratic Party, Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ were both detained this past night, at their homes, alongside with 11 Turkish MPs who were also taken into custody.
The 22nd of October the second interregional forum channel Elbe Danube took place in Břeclav (CZ). The 4 member parties of the European Left SDS (CZ), Munkaspart 2006 (HU) and KPÖ as well as KSČM (CZ). 27 Persons from 4 Parties and invited guests from the KKS (Communist Club of Slovakia) participated. Activists, leading functionaries as well as delegates to nationwide parliaments and municipalities attended. The meeting was very free and open.

The Party of the European Left (EL) will hold its 5th Congress next December in Berlin, Germany, gathering delegations from all its parties to decide on the political focus for the next three-year term.
