Charlie Hebdo: The French Republic and its values are stronger than the hate

This Wednesday, the 7th January, France, its republican values coming from "Les Lumières" (Enlightment), has been struck wholeheartedly through the barbarian attack against the newspaper Charlie Hebdo by a military trained commando justifying ifs criminal gesture as a "vengeance for the prophet". Twelve persons have been savagely assassined, amongst them talented figures of the French satire, dissonant and impertinent voices.

The terrorists have slaughtered, cold-bloodedly, friends of liberty and humour, critical spirits which roles are indispensable in a democracy, as well as policemen who were protecting them and a maintainance agent present at the wrong place at the wrong time. The European Left is mourning, solidary with their families, their friends, collegues and camrades.

In decimating Charlie Hebdo. these obscurantists have attack the democracy, the freedom of press, the right to caricature. We have trust in the French society to be able to prevent falling into the trap of hate and division, thanks to the values of the Republic "Liberté, galité, Fraternité" (Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood). Fighting the obscurantism requires a powerful gathering against all forms of racism and for the defence of the freedom of speech.

We are all concerned. The international solidarity must continue to express itself strongly.
