Hands off Syria!
The Working Group on Middle East of the Party of the European Left is deeply concerned about the imminent danger of a massive expansion of the Syria conflict. A US military strike would lead to an open confrontation with Russia.
In view of the concrete threat uttered by US President Donald Trump's war threat against Syria the European Left calls for protests in the different European countries. We oppose any kind of bombardment because that always afflicts the civilian population the most.
The alleged use of poison gas must now be clarified under the supervision of the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons). The US has offered no evidence of the attack, and confirmation of any such attack could take weeks. The United Nations has to be in the driver seat for investigating the current allegations and for finding a political solution for the ongoing and disastrous war in Syria.
Syria has been at war for seven years, with half a million dead. The various great powers have diligently fueled this conflict. The European Heads of State and the European Union must exert pressure on US President Trump not to endanger Syria even further and not to risk a global escalation. Bombs do not create peace. We call on the European Government to declare explicitly that they neither directly nor indirectly participate in military attacks nor will they support them.
The military escalation has to stop and therefore it is crucial to withdraw the european political and military support for the US-threats against Syria.
