“We are hope, life for an exhausted Europe because of neoliberalism'' said Pierre at the start of his speech at the IV Party of the European Left Congress. He explained that the analysis of the situation was already written in the documents and that he wanted to focus on the future. It was here when he emphasized on the disposition of the party of “being an essential player on the political fight in Europe so that, finally the path of an alternative policy could be open” An alternative, he said, not only for right-wing ideas but for social democracy that has agreed a big coalition together with Merkel. “We are the only political force on total opposition to austerity and totalitarianism of the Troika... and that's what make us attractive for every trade union and political or social forces that rejects austerity.”

The President of the European Left Party defined this Congress as “The Congress of Europe's future”, the most important of the Party, because of “the historical moment of the capitalist crisis and nearly chaos we are living” with every european agreements questioned like the ECB “and his armed wing, the Troika”, and the totalitarianism that takes out power from the Parlaments.

The european elections are the primary objective of the Party, because of their proximity and ther decisive nature when changing the balance of forces “and reinforcing left groups on the European Parliament” and he explained the work done on the programatic platform fot the 2014 elections. Another proposal on ELP’s agenda it’s the creation of the Alternative Forum, which will be celebrated after the elections.

Laurent spoke about Europe refoundation, about stopping the austerity policies and the need of the Troika to leave to put economy serving the citizens and giving priority to public wellfare instead to give it to markets.

Public debt also occupied a vital place on his speech, stating tha “we aren’t on a debt crisis because the public debt isn’t the outcome of the public indebtedness but of the capitalist crisis” because of that this Congress shall decide wheter the refusal to pay the illegitimate debt, as one of the key points. “The debt –he said- it’s and ideological weapon that justifies the policies of austerity and inequality”. In fact, the ELP will host a thematic summit about this point in March at Brussels.

Regarding the nomination of Alexis Tsipras (Syriza leader) as candidate to the presidency of the European Commission, Laurent announced the decision was going to be taken in two steps. A first one, already done on Saturday evening, where the delegates approved with the 79,6% of votes to present a candidate for the European Commission, and a second one tomorrow Sunday when the Congress will vote about Alexis Tsipras for that candidancy.
