Marisa Matías: “We must put forward specific proposals to close this Congress successfully”
The 4th Congress of the European Left Party (EL) has started with the opening speech of the leader of the Spain’s United Left (Izquierda Unida, IU) Cayo Lara. Along with the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and the Catalonian organization EUiA , he is the host of this event that gathers together 33 political parties from many European countries. After Cayo Laras’s speech and the keynote address by the Vicepresident of the Purinational Republic of Bolivia, Alvaro García Linera, the introduction began of the debates that will give form to this Congress programmed to last three days.
Marisa Matías, Vicepresident of EL, was in charge of introducing the political document containing the main issues to be deliberated about. She explained the solutions that EL puts forward for an Europe that has undergone many changes since the last Congress. Matías spoke about neoliberal policies and austerity measures as well as the protest waves, the Arab springs, the first attempt for an European-wide general strike and also about the fact that there is no match today between social majority and political majority in Europe.
“We must put forward specific proposals to close this Congress successfully”. These proposals must aim at “challenging this Europe that is working as a servant of the financial markets and also at placing economic policies at the service of society”.
Matías, EL Vicepresident and Portuguese member of the European Parliament, underscored the importance of the coming European election in order to be in a stronger position “to submit our proposals for deliberation in that Parliament”. She finally declared that, in order to achieve this goal, “we must participate in the European election as an united front for the solidarity of the peoples in order to improve their living standards”.
